The History of PENN

  • 1961 – Penn Introduces its first spinning reel; the Spinfisher 700. The reel is legendary and it and its close relatives, the “Z” series, continue to set records and provide fishing enjoyment today
  • 1962 – Mr. Gary Stukes of Morristown, New Jersey sets the world record with his 810lb Blue Marlin caught using a Penn Senator 10/0 in Hatteras, North Carolina.

By 1962, 16 out of 20 world record stripers were caught using Penn reels.
1966 – Penn introduces the International series, specifically built for big-game tournament fishermen. Unique in their anodized gold finish, the International reels boast the fishing world’s first pre-set drag control and built-in strike stop. IGFA world records begin to fall at the hands of fishermen who use the International.
1966 – Penn’s traditional beauty, the Senator, is now offered for light-tackle angling.
1969 – The Penn Deluxe No. 722 and No. 720 Spinfisher are introduced, both light spin reels.
