The History of PENN

1971 – Fifteen year old Joe Di Carlo catches a 640lb Bluefin Tuna, a 50lb class IGFA record. Joe is using a Penn Reel International No. 80.
1972 – Penn introduces the Levelmatic Bait-Casting Reels and the International No. 130. The 130 becomes the premier reel for big game fisherman going after that record-breaking fish.
1972 – By now, Penn manufactures over 90 different models of reels.
1976 – The Kulpsville, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant opens, the largest of Penn’s three plants.
1977 – After much demand from the fishing community, Penn builds the Skirted Spool-Heavy Duty Spinfisher, or the 750SS.
1978 – Six years later, Penn has over 150 reels in production.

1979 – Frank Mundus, the inspiration for Robert Shaw’s character in the film Jaws, catches the largest Mako shark ever on rod and reel, weighing in at 1,080lbs.
